What is a LIMS?

A Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is a software system used to manage and organize laboratory data, samples, and workflows. It is designed to help researchers and lab technicians efficiently manage their lab operations, track samples and experiments, and store and analyze data. A LIMS can also be used to automate lab processes, such as sample tracking,  plate randomization, data analysis, and reporting. These systems can be integrated with lab equipment, such as microscopes, sequencers, and plate readers, to streamline lab workflows and improve data capture and analysis. Additionally, some (but not all) LIMS are compliant with regulatory requirements, such as 21 CFR Part 11.

Why is a LIMS important for biotech companies?

Biotech companies produce and use a lot of data. These data come from in-house wet lab experiments, computational work, available databases, or collaborations with external partners and contract research organizations (CROs). How to pick the right LIMS for your biotech company

There are a number of LIMS choices out there and it can be a daunting process to evaluate them all and work out which is best for your biotech company. There are several key factors to consider:

  1. Functionality: Consider the specific needs of your biotech company and the functions that are critical to your operations. For example, sample tracking, data management, external collaborations, regulatory compliance, and product sales. Does the LIMS platform support these functions? If not, is there a Customer Service team willing to customize the platform to your needs?
  1. Usability: Consider whether the system is easy for your lab personnel to use and what level of training is required. A user-friendly interface can help increase adoption and reduce errors. Is the LIMS intuitive? Can present and future team members easily use it?
  1. Flexibility: Consider how your workflows will change day-to-day, month-to-month, and year-to-year. Is the LIMS flexible and configurable? Can you change it to adapt to your evolving workflows and data management needs? 
  1. Scalability: Consider the current and future needs of your biotech company in terms of the number of users and the amount of data that will be managed by the system. Can the LIMS grow with you as you scale and add more teams, team members, and projects? 
  1. Integration: Consider how well the LIMS integrates with other systems and tools used by your biotech company, such as laboratory equipment, data analysis tools, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Can it integrate with legacy software, existing and future lab equipment, and third-party apps?
  1. Data security: Consider the data security features of the system, including data encryption, backup and recovery, and access controls. Is the LIMS certified as a secure, regulatory-compliant platform?
  1. Vendor support: Consider the level of support and service offered by the vendor, including training, documentation, and ongoing maintenance and upgrades. Is the vendor responsive? Are they willing to customize the platform for you?
  1. Compliance: Consider if the system can meet your compliance requirements for data management and security, and industry standards such as 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, and GDPR. How does the LIMS ensure data security?
  1. Cost: Consider the total cost of ownership, including the initial purchase price, implementation costs, ongoing maintenance and support fees, and future upgrades. What is the cost-benefit ratio of the LIMS?

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
